The Union of Santorini Cooperatives

In the heart of the enchanting island of Santorini, an organization stands out as the guardian of the local viticultural heritage and a promoter of sustainable development: the Union of Santorini Cooperatives, also known as SantoWines.

Founded back in 1947, SantoWines has weathered decades of changes and challenges, emerging as the largest organization on the island, proudly representing 1200 active growers. Its primary objective is to protect and promote traditional agriculture in Santorini, producing high-quality wines with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and other agricultural products.

The Union of Santorini Cooperatives is not merely a commercial entity but an institution deeply rooted in the community, committed to safeguarding the interests of local growers. Its mission is based on principles of transparency and respect, providing better trading conditions and ensuring the rights of producers and workers.

With 1200 hectares of vineyards scattered across the island, Santorini boasts an annual grape production that, under optimal conditions, reaches up to 3500 tons, translating into approximately 2,275,000 liters of Santorini PDO wine, equivalent to about 3.3 million bottles. However, over the past five years, a shadow has loomed over Santorini’s wine industry due to adverse weather conditions and a drastic decrease in precipitation. This has led to a 30-40% decrease in annual grape production, challenging the resilience and determination of growers and their supporters.

Despite the challenges, SantoWines remains steadfast in its commitment to preserve Santorini’s viticultural heritage and promote sustainable agricultural development. With visionary leadership and a strong connection to the local community, the Union of Santorini Cooperatives continues to be a beacon of hope and progress for farmers and wine lovers worldwide.
