The Netherlands recently welcomed the Heva project, a unique initiative designed to highlight the exceptional wines and PDO agri-food products from volcanic terroirs across Europe. Presented through a series of highly anticipated seminars led by renowned wine journalist Fred Nijhuis, the event drew the attention of sommeliers, journalists, and food and wine professionals. Held between September 17th and 18th, the seminars took place in some of the Netherlands’ most vibrant cities.
Heva project’s Dutch seminar series focused on promoting wines and PDO agri-food products that come from volcanic regions, each protected by their respective Consortia: Soave, Lessini Durello, Santo Wines and Monte Veronese. The aim was to bring attention to the unique characteristics these terroirs impart on the products they create. For this reason, the seminars were a journey of sensory discovery, offering attendees a chance to appreciate the complexity and authenticity of volcanic terroir products.
Furthermore the workshops, held in collaboration with prestigious locations like Roemer wine restaurant in Utrecht and the Michelin-starred De Rozario in Helmond, brought together a dynamic mix of more than 50 wine professionals, sommeliers, and culinary experts. These Masterclasses represented a rare opportunity to dive deep into the intricacies of volcanic wines and food, with a strong focus on education and appreciation for the natural environments that shape these extraordinary products.
One of the event’s key highlights was the exceptional variety of volcanic wines presented for tasting. These wines, renowned for their distinctive flavors and minerality, offered attendees a comprehensive look at the world of volcanic viticulture.

In addition to the wines, attendees were treated to a selection of three different types of Monte Veronese DOP cheese, including the famous “di malga – Slow Food presidium.” These cheeses, much like the wines, are shaped by the volcanic landscape in which they are produced, offering a full, rich sensory experience that perfectly complemented the wines.
In short our project is an ambitious initiative focused on showcasing the excellence of wines and agri-food products that stem from volcanic terroirs, all protected by EU protection marks such as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). The Dutch seminars were part of a larger educational effort aimed at elevating the profile of these unique products among industry professionals.
Also the seminars in the Netherlands successfully highlighted the incredible diversity and quality of products born from volcanic terroirs. Through the engaging presentations, tastings, and workshops, attendees gained a deep appreciation for the way volcanic soils shape the flavors of wines and cheeses, creating truly unique sensory experiences.
As this project continues its journey through Europe, it promises to bring even more attention to the rich agricultural heritage of volcanic regions, ensuring these remarkable products receive the recognition they deserve.
