Soave: A World Heritage of Culture, Agriculture, and Sustainability

The Soave region, with its winding vineyards and historic cellars, has long captivated wine enthusiasts. Yet not many are aware that this place graced by picturesque landscapes and enriched by Medieval castles and terraced vineyards earned a significant accolade in 2018. We are talking about the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

Soave’s Distinctive and Unique Landscape

Soave is renowned for its unique landscapes, characterized by vineyards cultivated using the traditional pergola veronese and an intricate system of hydraulic structures made up of dry-stone walls. These elements, which have been recently acknowledged by UNESCO as intangible heritage, along with the appassimento and Recioto di Soave winemaking traditions, are now under international protection as integral components of Soave viticulture.

A Long Journey for the Recognition

The path to achieving the GIAHS recognition commenced in 2006 with the publication of “Un paesaggio Soave“. The document was the first to acknowledge the intrinsic value of all the distinctive elements of this territory, which have been dedicated to viticulture for over two centuries. In 2015, the publication of “Origine, Stile e Valori” laid the groundwork for the coordinated efforts of the Consortium, eventually leading to the recognition as Italy’s First Historical Rural Landscape. Finally, the GIAHS candidacy was drafted by Aldo Lorenzoni in collaboration with Chiara Mattiello and the Consortium team, who worked tirelessly to achieve this result.

Looking to the Future

Sandro Gini, President of the Consorzio Tutela Vino Soave, stated, “This is a great and highly satisfying outcome that places Soave among the most significant agricultural and wine systems in the world. Soave becomes an example for all of humanity, and this brings us nothing but joy.”

Aldo Lorenzoni, Director of the Consortium, added, “Recognition is not an endpoint but is only the beginning. There are numerous projects that we are implementing for the dynamic preservation of this site, the only one of its kind in the world. Through these projects, the entire production system is moving in the same direction, one distinguished by sustainability and confidence in the future.”

A Unique Masterpiece of Culture, Agriculture, and Sustainability

Soave, with its scenic beauty and rich winemaking tradition, now shines as a jewel of humanity, seamlessly blending the ancient with the modern in an incredible symphony of culture, agriculture, and sustainability. It is a place where the past is revered and the future is embraced, offering a lesson to the world on the importance of preserving the cultural and agricultural roots that have shaped us.
